Anthropic Puts Claude Inside Microsoft Word — and Lawyers Should Take Note

by NE Dispatch - Apr 13, 2026 134 Views 0 Comment

Anthropic launched Claude for Word on April 10, 2026, completing its full Microsoft Office integration. The AI sidebar drafts, edits, and redlines documents as tracked changes — targeting legal, financial, and enterprise users on Team and Enterprise plans.

Claude for Words

When Anthropic quietly dropped its Claude for Excel add-in earlier this year, it looked like a curious experiment in enterprise AI. Now, with the addition of Claude for Word — available in public beta since April 10, 2026 — the picture is much clearer: Anthropic is going after the daily workflows of every knowledge worker, one Office app at a time.

The new add-in installs as a persistent sidebar directly inside Microsoft Word on Mac, Windows, and the web. From there, it can read your document, answer questions about it with clickable section citations, rewrite passages, work through comment threads, and deliver every edit as a native tracked change — the same kind your colleagues use when reviewing a contract manually.

“Claude reads complex multi-section documents, works through comment threads, and edits clauses while preserving your formatting, numbering, and styles.”

Why Legal Professionals Are the Primary Target

Anthropic has been unusually direct about who this tool is built for. The very first listed example use case on the Microsoft Marketplace page is legal contract review — and the screenshots that accompany the listing show an NDA under review. The suggested prompts make the intent explicit: summarize key commercial terms, flag clauses that deviate from market-standard positions ranked by severity, and make the indemnification mutual by inserting standard fallback language.

This is not a coincidence. Two months before this launch, Anthropic released a legal plugin for its Claude Cowork agentic platform, which reportedly wiped an estimated $285 billion in market value from legal technology companies in a single trading session. Claude for Word is the next step: putting that same legal-grade AI capability inside the application where most lawyers already live — Microsoft Word.

Beyond legal, finance professionals can use it to draft memos, populate summary tables from Excel data, and run final consistency checks on reports. HR teams can fill templates and standardize policies at scale.

How to Get Started: A Step-by-Step Guide

Getting Claude into your Word workflow is straightforward. Here is the full process:

1 Check your plan eligibility

Claude for Word is currently available only to Claude Team and Enterprise subscribers. Individual Pro and free plan users are not supported during the beta period.

2 Check your Word version

You need Word on the web, or Word on Windows (Microsoft 365 Version 2205 / Build 15202.10000 or later), or Word on Mac (version 16.61 / Build 22040100 or later). Legacy Word 2016/2019, iPad, and Android are not supported.

3 Install from Microsoft Marketplace

Visit the Claude for Word listing on the Microsoft AppSource marketplace and click “Get it now.” Alternatively, open Word, go to Insert → Get Add-ins, and search “Claude by Anthropic.”

4 Sign in with your Claude account

Once installed, activate the add-in from Home → Add-ins (Windows) or Tools → Add-ins (Mac) and sign in with your existing Claude credentials. No separate account is needed.

5 Open a .docx or .docm file

Claude for Word only works with .docx and .docm formats. If your file is .doc or .rtf, convert it first via File → Save As → Word Document.

6 Start working from the sidebar

Ask questions about your document, select text and request edits, enable tracked changes mode, or type “Work through my open comments” to let Claude handle your comment queue.

7 Connect to Excel and PowerPoint (optional)

Claude for Word shares context with the Excel and PowerPoint add-ins. Open all three, and Claude can pull data from a spreadsheet directly into your Word memo without copy-pasting.

Admin deployment

IT administrators can deploy Claude for Word organization-wide via the Microsoft 365 Admin Center under Settings → Integrated Apps → Add-ins, or by uploading the manifest XML file available at pivot.claude.ai/manifest-word.xml. Organizations routing through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, or Microsoft Azure can connect without a separate Claude account.

Six Features That Define the Add-in

Document Q&A with Citations

Ask any question about your document and get answers with clickable references that jump to the exact section.

Format-Safe Editing

Edit any selected passage without disturbing surrounding styles, numbering, or heading structure.

Native Tracked Changes

Every AI edit lands as a Word tracked revision — accept or reject each one individually from the review pane.

Comment-Driven Editing

Claude reads your comment threads, edits the anchored text, and replies in each thread explaining what changed.

Semantic Navigation

Find clauses by meaning, not keyword. “Find every provision touching data retention” returns thematic matches.

Cross-App Context

Shares live context with Claude for Excel and PowerPoint — pull figures directly into your Word memo.

What It Means for the AI Office Wars

Claude for Word positions Anthropic directly against Microsoft’s own Copilot, which has been the default AI assistant inside Word for paying Microsoft 365 subscribers. Anthropic’s bet is that users will prefer Claude’s nuanced document understanding — particularly its ability to reason about legal language and structured professional documents — over Copilot’s more general-purpose assistance.

The competitive stakes extend to specialist legal AI companies. Harvey, the legal AI platform valued at approximately $8 billion, uses Claude as one of its underlying models. Its CEO acknowledged that Anthropic remains a model partner while simultaneously noting Harvey has no plans to incorporate Anthropic’s Word add-in. The fact that a platform built on Claude must now compete with Claude-native Word tooling is one of the more striking ironies of the current AI landscape.

Security warning

Anthropic explicitly cautions users to only run Claude for Word on trusted documents. Files received from external parties — counterparty contracts, downloaded templates, collaborative documents shared over email — may contain hidden prompt injection instructions that attempt to manipulate Claude into modifying content or exfiltrating data. Always verify tracked changes before accepting.

Claude for Word is available now in beta on the Microsoft AppSource marketplace. It is free to install for Claude Team and Enterprise subscribers. A broader rollout to Pro and individual users has not been announced. Given the pace of Anthropic’s Office integrations this year, it likely will not be long.
