Manipur Kicks Off Feasibility Study for Inland Water Transport on Barak, Imphal, and Nambul Rivers

A kick-off meeting for a techno-economic feasibility study and DPR preparation for inland water transport on the Barak, Imphal, and Nambul rivers in Manipur was held in Imphal on April 17, 2026, funded by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways.

IMPHAL – A kick-off meeting for the "Techno-Economic Feasibility Study and DPR Preparation for River Barak and its Tributaries, River Imphal and River Nambul in Manipur" was convened today under the chairmanship of the Additional Chief Secretary (Transport), Government of Manipur. The meeting was attended by officials from the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), representatives of M/s Techmillenials Pvt. Ltd., and officers from various line departments including PWD, Water Resources, Commerce & Industry, Tourism, and Settlement & Land Records.

 

The meeting focused on the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) on Inland Water Transport (IWT) infrastructure for the Barak River and its tributaries, as well as the Imphal and Nambul rivers. During deliberations, the Additional Chief Secretary emphasised the strategic importance of developing the Jiri River as an additional mode of communication, particularly in alignment with the Government of India's Act East Policy. The consultant was accordingly directed to accord primary focus to the Jiri River while also exploring the potential for sustainable tourism development across other river systems in the state.

 

The DPR is targeted for completion within a period of six months. The project is fully funded by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Government of India.
