A National Investigation Agency team led by an Inspector General conducted a two-hour on-site probe at Tronglaobi on April 26, examining the April 7 bomb attack site where two children were killed and the CRPF post where security forces subsequently fired on protesters, killing three.
IMPHAL – In the early hours of April 7, 2026, a projectile — suspected to be a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) or mortar — was fired from nearby hill slopes onto a civilian home at Tronglaobi Awang Leikai in Bishnupur district. Two young children sleeping inside were killed: five-year-old Oinam Tomthin and his five-month-old infant sister, Oinam Yaisana. Their mother, Oinam Binita, a nurse, was critically injured in the attack. The children's father, Oinam Mangalsana, a Border Security Force jawan, was posted outside the state at the time. Authorities and local sources suspect Kuki militants operating from elevated positions in Churachandpur district launched the attack, though tribal bodies have disputed this.
The killings triggered massive protests across valley districts. Protesters stormed a nearby CRPF camp, and security forces opened fire to disperse the mob, resulting in the deaths of at least three more persons. Internet services were suspended in five districts — Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur — to prevent the spread of misinformation. The NIA subsequently took over the investigation. As of late April 2026, the family of the two children has reportedly refused to claim their bodies, demanding justice and the arrest of the perpetrators.
A team from the National Investigation Agency, led by an Inspector General, carried out an on-site investigation at Tronglaobi on Saturday, April 26, for over two hours, from approximately 11:50 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The probe was assisted by the Forensic Science Mobile Unit, Bishnupur Superintendent of Police Ksh Ravikumar, Additional SP (Ops) Chaitanya Mishra, the Officer-in-Charge of Moirang Police Station, and the SDPO Moirang. The team also interacted with family members of the victims as part of the inquiry.
At the bomb attack site in Tronglaobi Awang Leikai, the NIA team examined the suspected launch point from which the projectile was fired, the sleeping area where the two children were killed, and other locations relevant to the investigation. The investigating officer was instructed to collect and preserve crucial material evidence, including the bed, baby hammock, clothes, mattress, bedsheets, pillows, and mosquito nets in use at the time of the incident. These items were sealed in the presence of forensic experts.
Following the examination of the blast site, the NIA team proceeded to the 8th Battalion CRPF D Company post at P Gelmol, in connection with the firing incident that occurred during the public unrest triggered by the April 7 attack. The team met senior CRPF officials as part of the inquiry into the circumstances in which security forces opened fire on the agitated crowd, resulting in the deaths of three protesters. The NIA's investigation thus covers both the original militant attack and the subsequent use of live fire by the CRPF — bringing both incidents within the ambit of a single, centralised federal probe.
