IIIT Manipur Holds Fifth Convocation, 222 Students Awarded Degrees

IIIT Manipur holds its fifth convocation in Imphal, awarding degrees to 222 students, including two PhD scholars and four gold medalists.

Imphal, May 29: The Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Manipur on Thursday held its Fifth Convocation for the graduating batch of 2022–2026 at the Swami Vivekananda Auditorium of the institute’s City Campus at Mantripukhri in Imphal.

The academic ceremony began at 12:30 pm with the arrival of the academic procession into the auditorium. The procession included Registrar Dr. Nongmeikapam Kishorjit, Dean of Academics, Heads of Departments, members of the Board of Governors Shri Thangjam Dhabali, Shri Thoudam Jagat Singh and Prof. D.V.L.N. Somayajulu, Director of IIIT Manipur Prof. Krishnan Baskar, Chief Guest Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, and Chairman of the Board of Governors Dr. Sukhi Oraon.

The convocation commenced with the rendition of the National Song, Vande Mataram. This was followed by the presentation of the Annual Report by Director Prof. Krishnan Baskar, who highlighted the institute’s academic progress, research activities, institutional development, collaborations and achievements during the academic year.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Guest Prof. Devendra Jalihal congratulated the graduating students and their parents on the successful completion of their academic journey. In his convocation address, he spoke about the rapid transformation of India’s economy and technological landscape in recent years, especially in the post-pandemic period.

He said the younger generation now has significant opportunities in sectors such as manufacturing, infrastructure, defence, energy, entrepreneurship and emerging technologies. He encouraged students to adopt innovative and solution-oriented approaches in addressing national challenges and underlined the role of startups, technological integration and practical problem-solving in nation-building.

Prof. Jalihal also stressed the importance of higher education, research and physical well-being. He urged students to cultivate an evidence-based, socially responsible and assertive outlook in both their professional and personal lives.

The conferment of degrees and award of medals were carried out by Prof. Devendra Jalihal along with Chairman of the Board of Governors Dr. Sukhi Oraon and Director Prof. Krishnan Baskar.

A total of 222 students were conferred degrees during the convocation, including 207 students who attended in person and 15 who received degrees in absentia. Among the graduating students, 27 were women.

Degrees were awarded in various Bachelor of Technology programmes. In Computer Science and Engineering (Core), 94 students graduated, while 40 students received degrees in Computer Science and Engineering – Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. In Electronics and Communication Engineering (Core), 66 students were awarded degrees, and 20 students graduated from Electronics and Communication Engineering – VLSI and Embedded Systems.

The institute also awarded Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees to two research scholars. Ms. Reena G from the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering and Ms. Heisnam Kenny Devi from the Department of Humanities and Basic Sciences received their doctoral degrees.

Four gold medals were presented to students securing first rank in their respective programmes for outstanding academic performance.

Mr. Aman Ahmad from Computer Science and Engineering secured a CGPA of 9.44, while Ms. Mahi Chhawchharia from CSE-AIDS recorded a CGPA of 9.91. In Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mr. Yashraj Singh secured a CGPA of 8.97, and Mr. Amritansh Kumar Singh from ECE-VLSI obtained a CGPA of 9.05.

The distribution of degree certificates was followed by an oath-taking ceremony in which the graduating students pledged to discharge their professional responsibilities with unity, integrity and dedication.

The convocation concluded with the National Anthem and the departure of the academic procession from the auditorium.
