Manipur State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities announces free accident insurance scheme for children with disabilities till September 2026.
Imphal, May 20: The Office of the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Manipur, has announced a free Group Accident Insurance Policy for children with disabilities in the state under a pilot initiative supported by the Government of India.
According to a notice issued on May 20, the scheme has been undertaken by the Inclusive Counsellors and Rehabilitation Association (ICRA), a registered trust, in collaboration with TATA AIG. The initiative was informed by the Office of the Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
The notice stated that the policy aims to provide insurance coverage for children with disabilities and their parents or guardians. The scheme will remain valid till September 2026, after which renewal will be considered based on the response and support received from stakeholders.
As per the announced coverage details, children with disabilities will receive accident insurance coverage of Rs 1 lakh, while parents or guardians will be covered for Rs 2 lakh. The scheme also includes cashless indoor patient department (IPD) coverage of up to Rs 50,000 for persons with disabilities. Officials said the scheme has also been uploaded on the Sugamya Bharat App of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Government of India.
The notice mentioned that the insurance initiative is applicable to all 21 categories of disabilities recognised under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. It further clarified that no benchmark disability criteria is required to avail the benefits of the scheme. Authorities said government-issued Disability Certificates or UDID Cards would be accepted for enrollment under the policy.
The premium for the insurance policy is presently being borne by ICRA through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) support, as applicable, the notice added. The State Commissioner’s office also informed that no additional data would be required from beneficiaries except submission of the prescribed Excel sheet. Supporting documents, however, would need to be submitted by the insured person or guardian at the time of claim settlement. The office appealed to concerned organisations, institutions and stakeholders to extend cooperation and help eligible children with disabilities avail the benefits of the scheme.
