The incident resulted in the death of an FCI truck driver identified as Nitish Kumar, 57, a resident of Hooghly district in West Bengal. Kumar was part of the convoy transporting essential commodities when the attack occurred.
A police personnel attached to Litan Police Station also sustained a bullet injury during the exchange of fire. Authorities have not released further details regarding the condition of the injured personnel.
The attack has drawn attention because it targeted a convoy involved in the movement of essential supplies, including food grains and fuel. The vehicles being escorted included FCI trucks as well as tankers carrying LPG and petroleum products.
Police said the convoy was operating under security cover due to the prevailing security situation in the region and the need to ensure the safe movement of essential goods. Such escorts are often provided in sensitive areas to prevent disruptions to supply chains and to safeguard drivers and transport workers.
Following the attack, security forces launched search operations and area domination exercises in and around the affected area. Police said efforts are underway to identify and apprehend all those involved in the ambush.
Officials stated that the operations involve multiple security agencies and are focused on locating the attackers who reportedly fired from positions on Patleijang hill. Additional security measures have also been taken in the area as part of the ongoing response.
The confirmation by Manipur Police that Kuki militants carried out the attack provides the first official attribution regarding those responsible for the incident. Authorities have not yet disclosed the number of militants involved or whether any arrests have been made.
The death of the truck driver has also highlighted the risks faced by civilian transport workers operating in conflict-affected areas. Drivers transporting food grains, fuel and other essential commodities often travel through regions requiring security escorts due to the possibility of armed attacks and disruptions.
Meanwhile, security agencies continue to maintain vigilance along key transportation routes to ensure the uninterrupted movement of essential supplies. Officials said search and area domination operations would continue until those responsible for the attack are traced and brought to justice.
Further details regarding the investigation are expected as security forces continue their operations in the area.
