Imphal, May 27: A three-day Quantum Computing Workshop organised by the Department of Computer Science at Manipur University commenced on Wednesday with support from the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) and technical collaboration from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.

The workshop aims to introduce students, researchers and faculty members to emerging developments in quantum technologies and their applications across various scientific and technological fields.

Delivering the welcome address and keynote speech, Dr. Khumukcham Robindro Singh, Associate Professor and Workshop Coordinator, described quantum computing as one of the most transformative technologies of the present era. He said the field has the potential to revolutionise sectors such as artificial intelligence, cryptography, healthcare, scientific research, optimisation and material science.

Dr. Robindro Singh stressed the importance of creating awareness and providing academic exposure to quantum technologies among students and researchers. He said such initiatives were necessary to prepare young scholars for future technological advancements and research opportunities.

He also expressed gratitude to Prof. Sonjoy Majumdar and Prof. Sabyashachi Mishra for their academic contributions to the programme. He thanked Prof. Somnath Roy for coordinating the workshop and acknowledged Aashish Kuvelkar for facilitating financial assistance from the National Supercomputing Mission.

Dalton Meitei Thounaojam, Head of the Department of Computer Science, highlighted the growing relevance of quantum computing in modern science and technology. He encouraged students and research scholars to actively explore emerging research domains and called for stronger interdisciplinary collaboration in quantum technologies.

Resource persons Prof. Sonjoy Majumdar and Prof. Sabyashachi Mishra spoke on the future scope and applications of quantum computing. They explained that quantum computing could solve highly complex computational problems beyond the capability of classical computers and could become a major driver of scientific innovation in the coming years.

The inaugural session was attended by faculty members, university officials, research scholars and students. Organisers also thanked the university authorities, including the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar and Dean of the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, for supporting the workshop.

The programme will continue over the next two days with technical sessions and hands-on interactions focused on capacity building in quantum computing.
