Meitei and Naga civil society leaders announced the formation of the Native Peoples’ Committee, Manipur, and adopted four resolutions in Imphal.
Imphal, May 26: Meitei/Meetei and Naga civil society organisation leaders and intellectuals on Tuesday announced the formation of the Native Peoples’ Committee, Manipur (NPCM), during a meeting held at Imphal Hotel in Imphal.
According to the declaration adopted at the meeting, the committee was formed following deliberations held on May 21 regarding what the participants described as “existential challenges” facing the native peoples of Manipur.
The declaration stated that the NPCM has been constituted as a collective platform to safeguard the rights, dignity, land and identity of the native peoples of the state and to secure their future.
The committee named Ashang Kasar as Convener, while Ph. Deban and Dr. L. Phaomei were appointed as Co-Convenors for the initial term.
The declaration further stated that the office bearers and executive members of the committee would be inducted with equal representation from both Meitei/Meetei and Naga communities.
According to the adopted mandate, the NPCM will function as a joint platform to coordinate policy positions and pursue what it described as peaceful, democratic and constitutional means to defend the land, rights and future of the native peoples of Manipur.
The meeting also adopted four resolutions unanimously.
The first resolution announced that a public convention of the Native Peoples of Manipur would be held on June 2, 2026 at Makhan village.
The second resolution demanded the removal of Assam Rifles from Manipur.
The third resolution called for the abrogation of the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement with Kuki militant groups at the earliest.
The fourth resolution urged the Manipur government to immediately implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state.
The declaration was signed by Convener Ashang Kasar and Co-Convenors Ph. Deban and Dr. L. Phaomei. The document also listed Dr. Ch. Birendro and Mibaa Hungyo as recording secretaries.
