Nagaland Police has appealed to citizens to maintain peace and communal harmony in the state amid concerns that disturbances from neighbouring regions could affect Nagaland.
Kohima, May 22: Nagaland Police has appealed to citizens to maintain peace and communal harmony in the state amid concerns that disturbances from neighbouring regions could affect Nagaland.
In a press release issued from the office of the Director General of Police on Friday, the police urged the public not to share or circulate unverified information, rumours, or provocative social media content that could create panic or disturb inter-community relations.
The advisory comes against the backdrop of the prevailing law and order situation in a neighbouring state. Officials warned that the spread of false narratives has become easier with the rise of artificially generated content and misinformation online.
The police particularly cautioned against posts or messages that could inflame ethnic tensions or disrupt social harmony in Nagaland. It said individuals found deliberately spreading fake news, rumours, or inflammatory material through social media or other means would face legal action under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Information Technology Act, and other applicable laws.

Citizens have also been asked to remain alert and report any suspicious individuals or activities that may attempt to disturb peace in the state. Such information should be immediately conveyed to the nearest police station or the Police Headquarters in Kohima, the statement said.
The police noted that Nagaland has so far maintained peace and normalcy despite tensions in neighbouring areas. It urged people not to react impulsively to developments outside the state and to cooperate in preserving stability.
Assuring the public that the situation is being closely monitored, the police said all necessary measures are in place to maintain law and order across the state.
