Konsakhul Village Authority has alleged that KNF(P) cadres and Leilon Vaiphei villagers carried out an armed attack in Kangpokpi district.

Cut off water pipe and Injured Konsakhul villager

Imphal, May 31: One villager was reportedly injured and while two others escaped unhurt after an alleged armed ambush on residents of Konsakhul Naga Village in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Sunday morning, according to the Konsakhul (Konsaram) Village Authority.

In a condemnation statement issued on May 31, the village authority alleged that armed cadres of the KNF(P), along with villagers from Leilon Vaiphei, attacked civilians at around 10:30 am when residents went to restore a disrupted water supply line serving the village.

The statement claimed the attackers ambushed villagers without provocation after tensions escalated over the cutting of the village’s water supply pipeline. According to the authority, the water line had allegedly been deliberately damaged earlier, affecting the daily needs of residents dependent on the supply.

“As a result of this heinous attack, villagers sustained serious injuries, while several others remain missing,” the statement said.

Local accounts circulated after the incident claimed that panic spread across the village following the firing. Sources said the injured person was evacuated for treatment, though no official details regarding their condition had been released at the time of filing this report.

The Konsakhul Village Authority described the incident as a “barbaric and inhumane attack” on innocent civilians and accused the alleged attackers of violating humanitarian principles and disturbing peace in the area.

According to the statement, villagers had proceeded to repair the disrupted water supply line when they were allegedly attacked. The authority stated that the disruption of essential public utilities and the subsequent violence had worsened insecurity among residents.

The statement further alleged that the people of Konsakhul were still dealing with the trauma of earlier incidents involving the abduction of civilians. It claimed that 18 Naga civilians had previously been abducted by KNF(P) militants and Leilon Vaiphei villagers, and that six of them still remain untraced.

“The perpetration of yet another violent attack against the village while families continue to endure the anguish of uncertainty is beyond human tolerance,” the authority stated.

The village authority also said the attack took place on a Sunday, which it described as a sacred day of worship and prayer for Christians. It termed the incident a grave violation of human rights and Christian values.

Calling for urgent intervention, the authority urged the government and security agencies to ensure the safety of villagers, restore disrupted essential services and conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. It also appealed for action against those responsible for the alleged attack.

The authority further called upon civil society organisations, human rights groups and concerned institutions to take cognisance of the situation and support the residents of Konsakhul.

According to a report published by Ukhrul Times, residents accused KNF(P) cadres and Leilon Vaiphei villagers of carrying out the attack after tensions rose over the disrupted water pipeline. However, independent verification of all allegations was not immediately possible.

MLA Awangbow Newmai has strongly condemned the firing incident on three villagers from Konsaram village. In a condemnation note issued on Sunday, the Tamenglong MLA alleged that “Kuki militants” opened fire on the villagers during the repair work.

The three villagers were identified as Kachiaklungbou Chawang (23), Manonlungbou Abonmai (19), and Pounganlakbou Malangmei (54). According to the statement, Kachiaklungbou sustained bullet injuries and was later evacuated by the Gorkha Regiment to the nearest hospital for medical treatment.

Condemning the attack, Awangbow Newmai stated that violence against civilians is unacceptable and only deepens fear, suffering, and division among communities. He also expressed concern for the victims and their families and called for a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident to establish the facts and bring those responsible to justice.

The MLA further urged all parties to exercise restraint, reject violence, and work towards peaceful dialogue and coexistence, asserting that the safety and dignity of every civilian must be protected at all times.

The latest incident comes amid continuing tensions in parts of Manipur. On May 30, several houses were set ablaze in Kharam Vaiphei village in Kangpokpi district in an attack that has triggered anger and concern among Kuki-Zo organisations, which have questioned the effectiveness of security deployment in the area and demanded an independent investigation into the incident.

The attack occurred even as thousands of Kuki-Zo people were participating in a nationwide democratic rally called by Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) to demand justice for three slain church leaders and the release of 14 Kuki-Zo hostages allegedly held by armed groups.

Local sources alleged that armed assailants suspected to be members of the ZUF-Kamson group launched the attack on Kharam Vaiphei village at around 2:15 pm. The village, located in the Leimakhong belt near the Army Headquarters, reportedly came under bomb and gunfire attack before several houses were set on fire.

Sources said at least five residential houses were reduced to ashes during the assault. No casualties were immediately reported, although residents described the incident as traumatic and said families were forced to flee to safety as the attack unfolded.

No official response from security agencies or from the groups named in the allegations had been issued till the time of publication.

This is a developing story.
