CAU Councils Chart Roadmap for Agricultural Education, Research and Extension in Northeast

Central Agricultural University held its Research, Extension Education and Academic Council meetings in Mizoram, focusing on research priorities, curriculum development and agricultural innovation in the Northeast.

Imphal, June 24: The Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal, concluded a series of key statutory meetings in Mizoram aimed at strengthening agricultural education, research and extension services across the Northeast.

The 15th Research Council Meeting (RCM), 11th Extension Education Council Meeting (EECM) and 33rd Academic Council Meeting were held from June 22 to 24 at the College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, Selesih.

The three-day programme brought together academicians, scientists, administrators and officials from all thirteen constituent colleges of the university to review achievements, assess ongoing initiatives and formulate future strategies for agricultural development in the region.

The joint council meeting was inaugurated by Mizoram Governor General (Dr.) Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd.), who also visited an exhibition showcasing technologies and innovations developed by CAU and its constituent colleges.

During the inaugural session, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Anupam Mishra welcomed participants and highlighted the university's ongoing efforts in agricultural education, research and extension. The programme also featured the transfer of technology developed by the College of Community Science, Tura, to PRIME Meghalaya, the release of university publications and Comilla Cotton Meditech products, and the distribution of lavender seeds to farmers.

Addressing the gathering, the Governor appreciated the university's contribution to the agricultural sector in the Northeast through its educational programmes, research activities and extension services.

The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Director of Research Prof. K. Mamocha Singh.

Among those attending the event were Vice-Chancellor of Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) Prof. Pravat Kumar Roul, former Vice-Chancellor of Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya Prof. M.M. Adhikary, former Assam Agricultural University Vice-Chancellor Dr. K.M. Bujarbaruah, former ICAR Deputy Director General Dr. P. Das, former Director of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region Dr. S.V. Ngachan and several other senior academicians and experts.

Following the inaugural programme, the Directors of Research, Extension Education and Instruction presented reports on achievements, action taken on previous recommendations and new initiatives undertaken by the university.

Research Team Leaders representing various disciplines also presented updates on progress achieved since the previous Research Council Meeting and outlined proposed activities for the 2026-27 academic year.

The technical sessions held on June 22 and 23 covered a wide range of disciplines including crop sciences, horticulture, forestry, agricultural engineering, food technology, community science, veterinary sciences, fisheries and natural farming.

Participants discussed research achievements, emerging innovations and future priorities relevant to the agricultural sector in the Northeast.

Senior scientists and heads of six Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) also presented reports on extension activities undertaken during 2025-26. Particular attention was given to initiatives such as Chemical-Free Villages and community-based agricultural development programmes. The presentations also reviewed action taken on recommendations adopted during the previous Extension Education Council Meeting and outlined plans for the coming year.

The 33rd Academic Council Meeting was held on June 23 under the chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor Dr. Anupam Mishra.

The council deliberated on a range of academic issues, including curriculum development, academic regulations, student welfare measures, quality enhancement initiatives and the integration of research and extension activities within higher agricultural education.

Officials said several academic proposals and recommendations were discussed and approved during the meeting.

On the final day, deans from all thirteen constituent colleges presented reports detailing progress made on recommendations adopted during the previous council meetings. The presentations also reviewed achievements recorded during 2025-26 and highlighted the implementation of initiatives such as Satellite Villages and Chemical-Free Villages.

Action plans for the upcoming academic year were also presented, focusing on strengthening research outreach, improving extension services and enhancing academic programmes.

The valedictory session was presided over by Vice-Chancellor Dr. Anupam Mishra. External experts and council members commended the university's achievements and offered suggestions for further strengthening its academic, research and extension activities.

Director of Extension Education Dr. Ng. Iboyaima Singh delivered the vote of thanks.

University officials said the meetings provided an important platform for reviewing progress and identifying future priorities for agricultural education and rural development in the Northeast.

The deliberations are expected to guide CAU's future initiatives aimed at improving agricultural productivity, promoting innovation and supporting sustainable development across the region.
