Imphal, June 15: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Monday flagged off fertilizer distribution trucks and launched an organic fertilizer brand, ‘Oorja’, during the Fertilizer Distribution Camp for Kharif 2026 organised by the Directorate of Agriculture at Sanjenthong in Imphal.

The programme marked the start of fertilizer distribution for the ongoing Kharif season and also focused on promoting organic farming practices in the state. As part of the initiative, the newly launched organic fertilizer ‘Oorja’ will be made available to farmers at a subsidised price of ?250 per bag against its market price of ?480.

During the event, the Chief Minister also visited and inspected the Organic Outlet Shop located near the venue.

Addressing the gathering, Khemchand Singh said the state government has taken several measures to ensure that fertilizers reach farmers on time and in adequate quantities. He noted that nearly 1.8 lakh bags of urea had been distributed up to September last year. However, reports of shortages were received from some areas despite the overall distribution.

To prevent such issues and ensure equitable supply, the government has introduced a system under which fertilizer distribution is carried out based on Aadhaar cards, farmer cards and location-specific requirements. According to the Chief Minister, the process is intended to improve transparency and ensure that fertilizers reach genuine beneficiaries.

He informed that around two lakh bags of urea are currently available in stock and assured farmers that there is no shortage of fertilizers in the state at present. Distribution, he said, would be carried out according to actual requirements and only after verification of relevant documents.

Khemchand Singh further stated that officials of the Agriculture Department have been directed to closely monitor fertilizer distribution across all districts. He also appealed to farmers to approach the Directorate of Agriculture if they face any difficulties related to fertilizer availability or distribution.

The Chief Minister said the government is also working to reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers by expanding organic farming in Manipur. He informed that nearly 4,000 hectares of land have already been brought under organic cultivation and that efforts are underway to bring another 4,000 hectares under organic farming in the coming years.

The programme was attended by Agriculture Commissioner Thaithuilung Panmei, officials of the Agriculture Department, public representatives, farmers and other stakeholders.
