Imphal, June 30: A broad coalition of civil society organisations and community groups staged a sit-in protest at Changangei Community Hall in Imphal West on Tuesday, demanding justice for six Liangmai Naga civilians who were allegedly abducted and killed. Organised under the banner of the Justice for the Six Sons of Koubru Joint Committee (J6SKUC), the protest concluded with participants forming a human chain and reiterating a series of demands directed at both the Government of India and the Government of Manipur.

The demonstration brought together women, youth, elders, community leaders and representatives of several organisations, reflecting a coordinated campaign that the organisers said would continue until those responsible for the killings are brought to justice.

The protest was supported by the Changangei Apunba Club, Langdai Khangsunaha, Joint Tribes Council (JTC), All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO), Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), 14 Civil Society Organisations, RIFPCO Manipur and several other groups.

Participants carried placards with messages demanding accountability, including "Arrest the Named Killers. Prosecute the Guilty," "End SoO. End the Proxy War," "Declare KNF-P as a Terrorist Organisation," "Accountability Starts at the Top," and "Protect Our Land. Uphold the Law."

According to the organisers, the Justice for the Six Sons of Koubru Joint Committee (J6SKUC) is a citizens' platform established to pursue justice for the six Liangmai Naga civilians who were allegedly abducted and brutally killed.

The committee has been constituted under the aegis of the Joint Tribes Council (JTC), an apex body representing the Inpui, Liangmai, Rongmei and Zeme tribes. It said the objective is to coordinate a peaceful, democratic and united movement for justice while working alongside civil society organisations across Manipur.

The committee is coordinated by Chingdinliu Panmei, State President of Rongmei Naga Luphwam, Manipur.

Organisers described the platform as one that seeks accountability through lawful means while advocating for the rule of law and justice for the victims and their families.

Addressing the gathering, representatives of J6SKUC said the campaign was not directed against any particular community but was intended to ensure impartial enforcement of the law.

They stated that justice should not be delayed when civilians have allegedly been abducted and killed, adding that public confidence in the justice system depends on prompt legal action against those found responsible.

The organisers appealed to both the state and central governments to ensure that the investigation is pursued without political interference and that accountability is established through due legal process.

During the protest, the committee submitted five demands, describing them as necessary steps to restore public confidence and uphold the rule of law.

The first demand called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of all those allegedly involved in the killings. The committee specifically named Lalboi Vaiphei, identified in the statement as Chief of Leilon Vaiphei Village, Thanggilian Vaiphei, whom it identified as serving in the Manipur Police, and members of the Kuki National Front-Presidential (KNF-P).

Secondly, the committee demanded the immediate abrogation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement, alleging that it has enabled what it described as a continuing proxy war.

The third demand sought the declaration of the KNF-P as a terrorist organisation, along with stringent legal action against its members and alleged support networks.

The fourth demand called for the immediate removal of Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen, which the committee said was necessary in the interest of public confidence and accountability.

Finally, the committee sought the eviction of what it described as illegal villages established in violation of the law and restoration of encroached government and protected lands.

J6SKUC said the movement would continue through peaceful and democratic means until justice is delivered to the six Liangmai Naga victims and the demands submitted to the government are addressed.

The committee said its campaign aims to prevent impunity and reinforce the principle that no individual or organisation should be above the law.

Participants concluded the programme by forming a human chain around the protest venue while continuing to raise slogans demanding justice and accountability.

At the time of issuing the press release, there was no official response from the Government of Manipur, the Government of India, the Deputy Chief Minister, the Manipur Police, or the Kuki National Front-Presidential regarding the allegations and demands made by the committee.

The allegations against named individuals and organisations remain those of the organisers, and there was no indication in the statement of any judicial findings or official confirmation regarding the claims.
