Churachandpur DC Krishna Kumar reviewed key infrastructure projects, including a women and children's health centre and an indoor stadium, and handed over display cabinets to tribal museums.
Churachandpur, June 25: Deputy Commissioner of Churachandpur, Krishna Kumar, IAS, on Thursday reviewed the progress of two major infrastructure projects in the district and later handed over display cabinets to tribal communities for use in museums aimed at preserving indigenous heritage.
The Deputy Commissioner first inspected the ongoing construction of a Specialized and Dedicated Health Unit for Women and Children at the Lamka South Tribal Development Block complex in Khominthang, New Lamka.
The project is being developed in Lamka South Block, which gained recognition under NITI Aayog's Aspirational Blocks Programme after securing the top position in the Delta Ranking in December 2023. Officials said the health facility is being constructed as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare services in the area, particularly for women and children.
The foundation stone of the project was laid on May 26 this year by IAS officer Dharun Kumar S. Once completed, the centre is expected to provide maternal and child healthcare services, including labour room facilities, immunisation services and basic medical check-ups.
During the inspection, Krishna Kumar reviewed the pace and quality of the work and directed officials to ensure that construction standards are maintained and the project is completed within the stipulated timeframe. The contractor informed the Deputy Commissioner that the remaining work is expected to be completed within the next two months.
Later, the Deputy Commissioner visited Pearsonmun village to inspect the construction of a Multi-Purpose Indoor Stadium being built under the Rural Electrification Corporation. Pearsonmun village chief T. Khaikhomang was present during the visit.
Officials said the stadium is expected to strengthen sports infrastructure in the district and create opportunities for youth engagement and sporting activities. The facility is also expected to serve as a venue for community events and other developmental activities.
The inspection team included Additional Deputy Commissioner and Sub-Divisional Officer (Mualnuam) Thangboi Gangte, MCS, who is also in charge of the Lamka South TD Block, and Project Director of the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) Jameson Hangshing, MCS, who is also serving as in-charge Block Development Officer of Lanva.
In a separate programme held at the DRDA Office in the Mini Secretariat Complex at Tuibong, the Deputy Commissioner handed over four steel display cabinets each to six tribal communities — Paite, Vaiphei, Gangte, Simte, Kom and Zou.
The cabinets are intended for use in tribal museums established under the Manipur State Archaeology Department under the Department of Art and Culture.
According to officials, the museums were created as part of a broader initiative to preserve traditional artefacts, protect cultural identity and promote the rich heritage of Manipur's tribal communities. The display cabinets will help communities properly showcase and preserve cultural objects and historical items collected for the museums.
The distribution programme was attended by DRDA Project Director Jameson Sehlal Hangsing, representatives of the six tribal communities and leaders of various civil society organisations.
Officials said the initiative reflects ongoing efforts to support cultural preservation while strengthening community participation in safeguarding traditional heritage for future generations.
