Imphal International Airport has witnessed significant growth in passenger traffic over the past 12 years as its new integrated terminal and cargo facilities move towards completion.
Imphal, June 14: Imphal International Airport has recorded substantial growth in passenger traffic and aircraft movements over the past 12 years, while major infrastructure expansion projects, including a new integrated terminal building and cargo facilities, are moving towards completion.
Airport officials said the airport currently handles more than 16 scheduled arrivals and departures daily, serving around 3,000 passengers every day. This marks a significant increase from 2014, when the airport handled about four arrivals and four departures daily with fewer than 500 passengers.
The growth in air traffic has been attributed to improved connectivity, expansion of airline services and increased reliance on air travel, particularly following disruptions to road transportation in the state since 2023.
As passenger numbers continue to rise, Imphal International Airport has emerged as the second-busiest airport in the Northeast after Guwahati. It is also among the few airports in the region equipped with radar surveillance facilities.
To accommodate future demand, construction of the New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) on the eastern side of the airport is progressing steadily. The project has achieved around 50 per cent physical completion despite challenges, including delays linked to the conflict situation and logistical constraints.
Officials said the new terminal, spread across approximately 22,000 square metres, is being developed as a GRIHA 5-Star Green Building. Once completed, it will feature four aerobridges, separate domestic and international arrival and departure sections, modern passenger amenities and architectural elements inspired by Manipur's cultural heritage.
The expanded facility is expected to significantly enhance passenger handling capacity. It will also include parking space for more than 1,000 vehicles and 15 buses. Airport authorities are targeting completion of the project by December 31, 2026, subject to timely execution of supporting infrastructure works and transportation arrangements.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh had earlier reviewed the project and directed agencies concerned to ensure timely completion while maintaining quality standards. During his inspection, he also emphasised the strategic importance of the airport expansion for strengthening connectivity and supporting economic growth in Manipur.
Alongside the terminal expansion, a dedicated cargo terminal has already been completed and is expected to become operational soon. Authorities believe full-scale cargo operations will improve trade and logistics services in the state. A newly constructed helipad is also ready for commissioning.
Passenger facilities at the airport have also undergone major upgrades. The security hold area has been expanded to accommodate around 450 passengers, while the number of check-in counters has increased to 18. Additional amenities such as a child care room, Kid Zone, free Wi-Fi, workstations, charging points, accessibility features and facilities promoting local artisans have been introduced to improve passenger experience.
Airport Director Chipemmi Keishing said the growth in passenger traffic and aircraft movements reflects the transformation of Imphal International Airport over the past decade. The achievements and infrastructure developments are being highlighted as part of the observance of Yatri Suvidha Diwas 2026, aimed at enhancing passenger convenience and service quality.
