Man Arrested for Stabbing to Death Thoubal Commando Havildar During Drug Operation

A 25-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing a Thoubal Commando havildar during a drug-related operation has been arrested by police.

Imphal, June 4: A 25-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing a police havildar during a drug-related operation in Thoubal district has been arrested, police said on Thursday.

The incident occurred around midnight on June 3 when a team of Thoubal Commando personnel, acting on specific intelligence regarding the transportation of suspected narcotics, detained two individuals for questioning.

According to police sources, one of the detainees, identified as Md Naobi alias Mahil (25) of Moijing Leingoijin, allegedly attacked Havildar Kh Suresh with a knife during the operation. Suresh, a resident of Yairipok Laimanai and attached to the Thoubal Commando unit from the 4th India Reserve Battalion (IRB), sustained critical injuries in the attack.

The injured police personnel was rushed to Thoubal District Hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries on the way before reaching the hospital, officials said.

Following the incident, the accused fled from the spot, triggering intensive search operations by police teams across several locations in and around the district.

Police said Md Naobi was successfully apprehended at around 8:45 am on June 4 after an overnight manhunt. Further investigation into the case is underway.

Meanwhile, the mortal remains of Havildar Suresh were subjected to a post-mortem examination at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) on Thursday. Following the procedure, his body was taken to his native village of Yairipok Laimanai, where family members, relatives and local residents gathered to perform his last rites.

The killing of the police personnel while on duty has drawn attention to the risks faced by security forces during anti-drug operations in the state.
