Manipur Technical University highlighted the role of research, innovation and intellectual property in economic growth, with experts urging the conversion of ideas into wealth, startups and jobs.
Imphal, June 11: Manipur Technical University (MTU) on Thursday underscored the need to transform research and innovation into tangible economic assets, with experts and academics asserting that intellectual property, entrepreneurship and technology-driven innovation can play a crucial role in driving Manipur’s economic growth. The call was made during a one-day awareness programme on the “Role of R&D and IPR in Economic Development”, where participants discussed how quality research can be converted into patents, startups, employment opportunities and wealth creation.
The programme was organised by the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Cell of MTU and saw active participation from faculty members, research scholars and students. The event focused on strengthening awareness about the role of research and development (R&D) and intellectual property rights (IPR) in fostering innovation and translating knowledge into economic value.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice-Chancellor of MTU underscored the significance of innovation, research excellence and intellectual property protection in shaping a knowledge-driven economy. He stressed that universities have a crucial role in promoting research and encouraging students and scholars to contribute to technological and societal advancement.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Dhanpat Ram Agarwal, an economist, Chartered Accountant and intellectual property expert. He spoke on the importance of converting “Research into Wealth” and “Idea to Asset” through innovation, creation of intellectual property and commercialization of research outcomes.
Dr. Agarwal said quality research can generate patents, technologies, startups and employment opportunities, thereby making a substantial contribution to economic development. He noted that intellectual property is increasingly becoming a key asset in the global knowledge economy and emphasized the need for institutions to promote a culture of innovation.
Referring to Manipur’s unique economic landscape, he observed that the state has limited scope for large-scale industrialisation and therefore must leverage its intellectual capital. According to him, high-quality research, innovation and entrepreneurship can help transform the state's economy while creating sustainable opportunities for young people.
The programme also featured an interactive session during which faculty members and research scholars discussed issues related to patents, technology transfer, startup development and commercialization of research findings. Participants appreciated the practical insights shared by the keynote speaker on innovation-led growth and economic development.
Following the programme, Dr. Agarwal visited the AI and IoT Laboratory at the MTU Incubation Centre. During the visit, he interacted with faculty members, innovators and student researchers and appreciated the university’s efforts in promoting emerging technologies, innovation and entrepreneurship. He encouraged continued work towards developing technology-driven solutions with social impact.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the IPR Nodal Officer, who expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor for his leadership and for inviting Dr. Agarwal to share his expertise with the university community.
On the occasion, the Vice-Chancellor announced that the IPR Cell of MTU is planning to launch a state-wide Intellectual Property Awareness Programme for school and college students across Manipur. The initiative aims to encourage innovation, creativity and awareness of intellectual property rights among young learners. Educational institutions interested in hosting such programmes have been invited to coordinate with the IPR Cell, MTU.
