Imphal, June 1: Senior IPS officer Mukesh Singh on Monday formally assumed charge as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Manipur, marking the beginning of a new leadership phase for the state's police force amid continuing security challenges.

Upon his arrival at the Police Headquarters (PHQ) in Mantripukhri, the newly appointed DGP was accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour by personnel of the Manipur Police. The event was attended by senior officers of the force.

Following the ceremonial reception, Singh held a brief introductory meeting with senior police officials, during which he outlined his priorities for the police department and discussed key areas of policing and administration.

According to police sources, the DGP emphasised the importance of professionalism in policing and called upon officers to uphold the Constitution of India and the Rule of Law in the discharge of their duties. He also stressed the need for impartiality and neutrality while serving the public, underscoring the importance of maintaining public trust in law enforcement institutions.

Singh further highlighted the significance of close coordination with various sister agencies involved in security and law enforcement, particularly in a state that continues to face complex law-and-order and security-related challenges.

The assumption of charge comes at a crucial juncture for Manipur, where security agencies remain engaged in efforts to restore normalcy in the aftermath of prolonged ethnic violence and ongoing concerns relating to border security, armed groups, extortion networks and inter-community tensions.

Mukesh Singh, a 1996-batch IPS officer of the AGMUT cadre, was appointed as the new Director General of Police by the Manipur Government last week. His appointment followed a series of transfers and postings involving senior police officers, a move widely viewed as part of a broader effort to strengthen the state's security and policing framework.

Before taking over as DGP, Singh had served in several key policing and security assignments. He had previously held the post of Director General of Police, Manipur, and is familiar with the state's security landscape and operational challenges. His return to the top police position is expected to provide continuity in security management at a time when the government is seeking to improve coordination among various security agencies operating in the state.

The recent reshuffle in the police establishment has been seen as a significant administrative move aimed at enhancing operational effectiveness and improving the response to emerging security concerns. The changes come amid ongoing efforts by both the State and Central Governments to strengthen law enforcement mechanisms and maintain stability across Manipur.

During his interaction with senior officers, Singh is understood to have reiterated the need for a citizen-centric policing approach while ensuring strict adherence to legal and constitutional principles. His emphasis on neutrality and professionalism is expected to be particularly significant in a state where security forces often operate in highly sensitive and challenging circumstances.

Senior police officials who attended the meeting assured the new DGP of their cooperation and commitment to carrying forward the priorities outlined during the interaction.

With Mukesh Singh now at the helm of the Manipur Police, attention will be focused on how the force addresses the state's evolving security challenges while balancing law enforcement responsibilities with public confidence-building measures.

The appointment is expected to play a key role in shaping Manipur's security strategy in the coming months as the state continues its efforts towards restoring peace, strengthening governance and ensuring effective policing across all districts.
