Union Minister Dr L. Murugan reviewed development works in Kolasib district and highlighted connectivity, tourism, education and renewable energy initiatives.
Kolasib, June 3: Union Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, Dr. L. Murugan, on Wednesday visited Kolasib district as part of his official tour of Mizoram and reviewed the progress of various developmental works being implemented in the district.
The Minister held an interactive session with representatives of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and chaired a review meeting at the Deputy Commissioner's Conference Hall. The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioner H. Dolianbuaia and heads of various government departments.
Addressing officials and NGO representatives, Dr. Murugan reiterated the Central Government's commitment to the development of the Northeast region. Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for the region, he said, “The development of the North East is the development of India.”
The Minister stated that the Centre has accorded high priority to strengthening infrastructure and improving connectivity across the Northeast. He noted that significant efforts are being made to expand road networks and other essential infrastructure to enhance the quality of life of people living in the region.
Dr. Murugan also commended government officials and civil society organisations for their contribution to public service and district development. He said the cooperation between government departments and community-based organisations plays an important role in accelerating development and ensuring that welfare initiatives reach the people.
Reviewing sectoral progress, the Minister expressed satisfaction with achievements in sports and women empowerment. He noted that several initiatives undertaken by both the state and central governments have helped create opportunities for youth and women across Mizoram.
Highlighting recent improvements in connectivity, Dr. Murugan pointed to the operationalisation of the Bairabi–Sairang railway line and the commencement of Rajdhani Express services connecting Delhi and Sairang. According to the Minister, the enhanced transport infrastructure has significantly improved access to Mizoram and boosted tourism in the state.
He said the improved rail connectivity has facilitated the movement of people from different parts of the country and contributed to a rise in tourist arrivals. The Minister added that better connectivity is expected to create new economic opportunities and support the state's long-term development goals.
Dr. Murugan emphasized that the Government of Mizoram, the Government of India and the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) are working in close coordination to implement developmental projects across the state.
He said continued support from the Centre has enabled progress in multiple sectors and reaffirmed the government's commitment to further strengthening development initiatives in Mizoram.
The Minister also spoke about the growing presence of Mizo filmmakers on national platforms. Expressing happiness over the participation of filmmakers from Mizoram at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa and other events, he said the achievements reflect the growing recognition of the state's creative talent.
Dr. Murugan stated that efforts would be made to encourage leading filmmakers from across the country to explore Mizoram as a filming destination. He noted that the state's scenic landscapes, natural beauty and tourism potential make it an attractive location for film production.
He added that the government sees tourism and cinema as important sectors capable of generating employment opportunities while also promoting Mizoram's culture and attractions to a wider audience.
Calling for greater public participation in national programmes, the Minister urged citizens and stakeholders to support the implementation of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which seeks to promote rooftop solar energy adoption and increase access to clean energy.
On the issue of education, Dr. Murugan stressed the importance of strengthening primary education, describing it as the foundation of learning and overall development. Expressing concern over student dropout rates, he appealed to parents, teachers and community leaders to work together to ensure that children remain in school and complete their education.
He said educational advancement remains critical for the state's future growth and called for collective efforts to improve learning outcomes and expand educational opportunities.
Concluding his address, the Minister urged all sections of society to actively contribute towards achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, the national mission aimed at transforming India into a developed country by the centenary year of Independence.
He said the participation of citizens, institutions and communities would be essential in realizing the vision and ensuring inclusive growth across the country.
