Nagaland has launched self-enumeration for Census 2027, with house-listing operations scheduled from July 1. Twenty-three States and UTs have completed Phase-I.
Imphal, June 16: Nagaland has begun the self-enumeration phase of Census 2027, joining Kerala in offering residents the option to submit household information online before the commencement of field enumeration next month.
According to the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India, the Self-Enumeration (SE) facility became available in Nagaland on June 16 and will remain open until June 30. The subsequent Houselisting and Housing Census (HLO) operations will be conducted from July 1 to July 30 through door-to-door visits by enumerators.
Residents can complete the process through the official Census self-enumeration portal and generate a Self-Enumeration ID (SE ID), which must be shared with enumerators during field verification visits.
The development marks another step in the rollout of Census 2027, which is being conducted using digital tools for the first time. While traditional house-to-house enumeration remains the backbone of the exercise, data collection is now being supported through a dedicated mobile application and online self-enumeration facilities.
The Houselisting and Housing Census constitutes the first phase of Census 2027. During this phase, information on housing conditions, household composition, amenities and assets is collected through a structured questionnaire containing 33 notified questions.
Field operations for the Houselisting and Housing Census also commenced in Himachal Pradesh on Monday after the completion of its self-enumeration period. Enumerators there will conduct household visits until July 15.
Meanwhile, house-to-house census operations are continuing in Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Puducherry and Uttar Pradesh. Authorities have urged residents who have already completed self-enumeration to keep their SE IDs ready when enumerators visit their homes.
The Census administration said households that do not use the online facility will still be covered through the regular door-to-door enumeration process to ensure complete coverage.
The latest update also indicates significant progress in the first phase of Census 2027 across the country. Houselisting operations that began in mid-May have now been completed in Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Rajasthan and Jharkhand, along with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi area. Punjab completed its operations on June 13.
For the Northeast region, Meghalaya has already concluded the first phase, while Nagaland has now entered the self-enumeration stage. Earlier, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Sikkim had completed their first-phase activities.
According to the Census authorities, 23 States and Union Territories have so far completed Phase-I of Census 2027. These include Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Sikkim, Meghalaya and several other states and UTs across the country.
The Census exercise assumes particular importance for northeastern states, where population distribution, housing conditions, migration patterns and access to public services often vary significantly between urban centres and remote rural areas. The data collected through the Houselisting and Housing Census is expected to support planning and policy formulation in areas such as housing, infrastructure, welfare programmes and public service delivery.
Officials reiterated that all information collected under the Census Act, 1948, remains strictly confidential and is used only for statistical and developmental purposes. Citizens have been urged to cooperate fully with enumerators and participate actively in the process.
Census 2027 will eventually provide updated demographic and socio-economic data that will serve as a key reference for government planning and resource allocation in the coming years.
