Imphal, June 4: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Manipur will introduce Dual Degree (BTech-MTech) programmes across all engineering disciplines from the 2026-27 academic session, while plans are also underway to launch an Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) from 2027-28, Director Prof. PVLN Somayajulu announced on Thursday.

Addressing a press conference at the institute's conference hall in Langol, Prof. Somayajulu said the move is part of NIT Manipur's efforts to expand academic opportunities and strengthen higher education in the state and the Northeast.

NIT Manipur, established in 2010 under the Ministry of Education, is among the 10 newer National Institutes of Technology in the country. The institute is preparing to begin admissions for the 2026-27 academic session in August through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) and the Centralized Counselling for M.Tech/M.Arch/M.Plan (CCMT) process.

According to the Director, the newly introduced Dual Degree programme will be available in all engineering branches currently offered by the institute, including Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Ten additional seats have been added to each engineering discipline for the programme.

As a result, NIT Manipur will admit 226 undergraduate students and 50 dual-degree students during the upcoming academic session, taking the total intake for engineering programmes to 276 students. Admissions will be conducted in accordance with JoSAA guidelines, with 50 per cent of seats reserved for students from Manipur and the remaining 50 per cent for candidates from other parts of the country.

Looking ahead, the institute has applied for approval to launch a four-year Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP), combining a Bachelor of Science degree with a Bachelor of Education degree. The proposed programme will offer majors in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics alongside professional teacher training. If approved, the course will commence from the 2027-28 academic session.

The Director said the initiative aligns with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which encourages integrated teacher education programmes to improve the quality of teacher training in India.

For postgraduate studies, NIT Manipur will offer 115 seats across MTech programmes in Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. In addition, 57 seats are available for MSc programmes in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

To encourage greater participation from local students, five seats have been reserved for candidates from Manipur. The institute has also earmarked 25 per cent of seats in postgraduate programmes for non-GATE candidates. Admissions and selection processes for several postgraduate courses have already been completed, and results have been announced.

Prof. Somayajulu also highlighted recent academic achievements of the institute. Following an assessment by a seven-member expert team, the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) granted three-year accreditation to the BTech programmes in Computer Science and Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering with effect from January 1, 2026.

He said NBA accreditation enhances the national and international recognition of academic programmes and is expected to improve employment and higher education opportunities for graduates. The institute is now preparing to seek accreditation for additional programmes, including Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and selected MTech courses.

The Director further announced that NIT Manipur has secured two programmes under the Ministry of Minority Affairs focusing on Artificial Intelligence and Entrepreneurship. More than 700 minority students from across Manipur are expected to receive hands-on training under these initiatives.

He also informed that the Computer Science and Engineering Department has been shifted to the institute's Lamphel campus to address disruptions caused by recurring floods at the Langol campus during the monsoon season. The relocation is expected to ensure smoother academic activities during the upcoming session.

NIT Manipur Registrar Prof. Khumukcham Tomba was also present at the press conference.
