NLF Urges Governor to Intervene

Imphal, June 27: A delegation of the Naga Legislators' Forum (NLF), Manipur, on Friday met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, seeking his immediate intervention over what it described as an escalating humanitarian and security crisis in the Naga-inhabited areas of the state.

The legislators submitted a memorandum alleging sustained attacks by armed Kuki militants since February this year and urged the Governor to direct both Central and State security agencies to restore law and order without further delay.

The representation was signed by NLF members Losii Dikho, Ram Muivah, Leishiyo Keishing, Khashim Vashum, convenor Awangbow Newmai and secretary J Kumo Sha.

According to the memorandum, the violence began on February 7, 2026, when armed Kuki militants allegedly opened fire on Tangkhul Litan village. It claimed that repeated armed attacks, ambushes and killings have since continued across Ukhrul, Kamjong and adjoining districts, creating fear among local residents.

The legislators alleged that innocent civilians travelling along National Highway-202, the main road connecting Ukhrul and Kamjong districts, have repeatedly come under attack. The memorandum referred to the killing of two Tangkhul civilians at TM Kasom on April 18, an ambush on the Officer-in-Charge of Chingai Police Station at the same location, and the fatal shooting of an FCI truck driver from Howrah, West Bengal.

The NLF claimed that despite these incidents, no significant combing operations or arrests have been carried out, allowing those responsible to continue operating with impunity.

The memorandum further alleged that several Naga villages, including Sinakeithei, Ringui, Thoyee and Sharkaphung, have been subjected to repeated gunfire, leaving more than ten civilians injured. It stated that seven of the injured were treated at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal.

According to the legislators, Sinakeithei village has remained under siege for nearly four months, resulting in a serious humanitarian situation for its residents.

Expressing concern over the recent killing of six villagers from Konsaram, the memorandum described the incident as one of the most horrific episodes in the ongoing conflict. It alleged that 18 villagers were abducted on May 13, of whom 11 women and one man were later released, while the bodies of the remaining six men were recovered on June 10 in a mutilated condition.

The legislators further alleged that the bodies had been dismembered and buried separately in an attempt to conceal the crime. The memorandum also contrasted the incident with the release of 14 Kuki detainees by Naga groups, stating that they had been freed unharmed.

Urging immediate action, the NLF appealed to the Governor to ensure the restoration of law and order, protect civilians in the affected areas and direct the concerned security agencies to take appropriate measures in response to the incidents highlighted in the memorandum.
