Chennai/Bengaluru, July 7: Blurgs AI, a deep-tech startup founded by two Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) alumni, has raised USD 2.2 million in a funding round to accelerate the global expansion of its artificial intelligence-powered intelligence platforms for defence, national security and commercial maritime operations.

The funding round was led by Pravega Ventures and Shastra VC, with participation from angel investors Suraj Nalin, co-founder of PlaySimple Games, and Yashwanth Madhusudhan, co-founder of Fyle.

The Chennai-based startup develops AI-driven operational intelligence platforms that support decision-making across defence, maritime operations, ports, shipyards and fisheries. The company said its technology provides real-time situational awareness, regulatory compliance and operational optimisation for sectors that play a critical role in global trade and national security.

According to the company, its platforms are already being used by several mission-critical organisations in India and abroad, including the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), DRDO laboratories, Mumbai Port Authority, Dubai Maritime City and The Nature Conservancy Group.

Blurgs AI noted that it secured this customer base before raising institutional funding. The company operates in two key segments. In the commercial maritime sector, its platforms help ports, fleets, shipyards and fisheries improve operational efficiency through AI-powered intelligence and real-time monitoring.

For defence and national security, the technology supports threat detection, adversary monitoring and cross-domain situational awareness to assist decision-makers in critical environments.

Blurgs AI was founded by Roshan Raj Mohanty and Dr. Avinash Kori, both alumni of IIT Madras. Roshan Raj Mohanty, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, said the company aims to build globally competitive deep-tech platforms from India under a "Make in India for the World" vision.

He said increasing geopolitical tensions and the growing importance of oceans for commerce and security have created a need for trusted, real-time intelligence that enables governments, enterprises and communities to make informed decisions.

Dr. Avinash Kori, Co-founder and Chief Scientist, who holds a PhD in Artificial Intelligence from Imperial College London, said the company's AI technology is designed to convert complex data into actionable insights by helping users distinguish meaningful information from background noise.

Pravega Ventures said India's coastline has become an increasingly strategic asset amid changing geopolitical conditions and climate-related challenges. The venture capital firm said Blurgs AI has built advanced technology capable of serving ports, shipyards, fisheries and defence, addressing a global demand for maritime intelligence.

Shastra VC Managing Partner Vasant Rao said modern maritime infrastructure increasingly depends on intelligent software capable of transforming fragmented operational and sensor data into real-time decision support for mission-critical operations.

Blurgs AI said the newly raised capital will be used to strengthen its core technology, expand its engineering and research teams, accelerate product development and scale operations internationally.

The company also plans to enhance its AI solutions for ports, shipyards, fisheries management, ocean conservation and defence applications as demand for maritime intelligence continues to grow across global markets.
