Imphal, July 18: Manipur University has received international recognition after one of its doctoral researchers won the Best Oral Presentation Award at the 36th International Symposium on Chirality (Chirality 2026) held in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, from July 14 to 17.

The award was presented to Loitongbam Thoithoi Singh, a Ph.D. scholar in the Department of Chemistry, for his research presentation titled "Circularly Polarized Luminescence Active Low Molecular Weight Lanthanide Gels: Tunable Emission Including White Light."

Thoithoi Singh is pursuing his doctoral research under the supervision of Dr. Raju Laishram, Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Manipur University.

The award-winning research focuses on the development of advanced chiral gels based on luminescent lanthanide materials capable of producing tunable light emission, including white-light generation.

According to the Department of Chemistry, the study demonstrates significant potential for future applications in photonic technologies, optical devices and advanced luminescent materials, areas that are increasingly important in modern materials science.

The international recognition highlights the quality of research being undertaken at Manipur University and reflects the growing contribution of its young scientists to cutting-edge scientific research.

Congratulating the scholar, the Department of Chemistry also acknowledged the guidance provided by Dr. Raju Laishram in carrying out the research. The department noted that the award brings pride to the university and reinforces its commitment to promoting high-quality scientific research, innovation and international academic collaboration.

It further stated that the achievement demonstrates the ability of Manipur University's researchers to compete successfully on global scientific platforms by presenting innovative work before leading experts from around the world.

The Department acknowledged the financial support received from several institutions that contributed to the research. These include Manipur University, the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) Start-up Research Grant, the ANRF-PAIR-B programme under the IISER Group, and the Department of Science and Technology's Fund for Improvement of S&T Infrastructure (DST-FIST).

The department also recognised the ANRF International Travel Support scheme, which enabled Thoithoi Singh to travel to Spain and present his research at the international symposium.

The Department of Chemistry reaffirmed its commitment to encouraging excellence in scientific research, fostering interdisciplinary innovation and creating opportunities for young researchers to participate in national and international scientific forums.

The latest recognition adds to Manipur University's growing presence in international research and showcases the scientific potential emerging from institutions in Northeast India.
