RIMS Imphal Gets Approval to Increase MBBS Seats to 150, Launch Six MDS Courses

RIMS Imphal has received NMC approval to increase MBBS seats from 125 to 150 and NDC approval to start six MDS courses from the 2026–27 academic session.

RIMS Gets Approval to Increase MBBS Seats

Imphal, July 12: The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, has received approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) to increase its annual MBBS intake from 125 to 150 seats for the 2026–27 academic session, marking a significant expansion of medical education capacity in the region.

In another major development, the National Dental Commission (NDC) has granted permission to the Dental College at RIMS to commence Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) programmes from the 2026–27 academic year.

According to a press release issued by the institute's Media Cell, the newly approved postgraduate dental programmes will be offered in six specialities, with an intake of three students in each discipline.

The approved MDS specialities are:

  • Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Oral Microbiology

  • Periodontology

  • Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics

  • Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics

  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

  • Prosthodontics and Crown and Bridge

The institute stated that the approvals represent a major boost to RIMS' academic and healthcare infrastructure and are expected to expand opportunities for medical and dental aspirants, particularly from Manipur and the North Eastern region.

The increase in MBBS seats is aimed at strengthening undergraduate medical education, while the introduction of MDS courses will enable the institute to offer postgraduate training in key dental specialities and enhance specialist healthcare services.

RIMS reiterated its commitment to delivering quality medical and dental education, advancing healthcare services, and producing skilled healthcare professionals to meet the needs of Manipur, the Northeast and the country.
