World Meetei Council Writes to PM Modi

Imphal, July 15: The World Meetei Council (WMC) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing concern over what it described as a growing trust deficit between the people of Manipur and the Government of India amid the prolonged ethnic conflict in the state.

In a representation addressed to the Prime Minister, WMC Chairman Heigrujam Nabashyam stated that the organisation was compelled to place its concerns before the Union government in what it described as the larger interest of the nation. The memorandum argued that the manner in which the crisis has unfolded and has been managed has significantly eroded public confidence.

According to the representation, the organisation believes the prolonged unrest has created a deep sense of mistrust among sections of the population towards the Government of India. It maintained that despite the deployment of central security forces, including the Indian Army, public confidence has not been restored.

The Council stated that its submission was intended to contribute constructively towards restoring peace, harmony and confidence in Manipur, while emphasising that its concerns were being raised in the interest of both the people of Manipur and the wider Northeast region.

Referring to the continuing conflict, WMC noted that the crisis has entered its fourth year despite the deployment of more than 60,000 Army and paramilitary personnel. It claimed that this has led many people to question whether the Government of India's policy and approach towards resolving the conflict is genuine.

The organisation also expressed concern over what it described as a widespread perception that the constitutional authority of Manipur's elected state government has not been able to function effectively during the ongoing crisis.

In its representation, WMC urged Prime Minister Modi to intervene to strengthen constitutional governance in Manipur in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of India.

The Council maintained that restoring public trust in the Government of India has become the most urgent requirement for achieving a durable and peaceful resolution to the situation in the state.

Concluding the memorandum, the organisation expressed hope that the Prime Minister's leadership would help restore peace, justice and confidence among the people of Manipur.

The representation was signed by Heigrujam Nabashyam, Chairman of the World Meetei Council.
