Bomb Explodes At Govt Spokesperson Sapam Ranjan’s

Imphal, August 28: A bomb exploded at the residence of Manipur government spokesperson and Konthoujam MLA Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh in Konthoujam, Imphal West, around 1.30 am on Friday. No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.

Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh visited Dr Sapam Ranjan’s residence later in the day and inspected the site of the explosion. The visit came as police began their investigation into the incident and efforts to determine who carried out the attack.

CM Khemchand posted on X: "Vsited the residence of MLA Dr. Sapam Ranjan Singh at Konthoujam Mayai Leikai following a bomb blast at his residence early this morning. I strongly condemn such senseless and barbaric attack on the residence of a people's representative. This act of violence is an attack on our democracy and the perpetrators will be brought to justice soon."

According to Dr Sapam Ranjan, a loud explosion was heard at about 1.30 am. The explosive had been thrown into the rear portion of the residential compound, where it detonated. He stated that police reached the spot soon after the incident and initiated necessary action.

Dr Ranjan condemned the attack in strong terms and questioned the purpose of resorting to violence against individuals and residential areas. He stated that such acts would not benefit Manipur and appealed for restraint in the interest of the state and its people.

“I condemn this act of violence at the highest level,” Dr Ranjan stated, adding that he had returned to Imphal only on Thursday after travelling to New Delhi to meet Central leaders on issues concerning Manipur. He said he did not know who was behind the incident or what their motive was.

Dr Ranjan also stated that he had not received any demand or threat before the explosion. The absence of a known threat has left the motive behind the attack unclear, pending the police investigation.

The incident comes days after Dr Ranjan had been involved in efforts to take up Manipur’s concerns with the Centre. On August 18, he announced that a delegation of ruling MLAs would travel to New Delhi to urge the Central government to take up updating the National Register of Citizens in the state before the Census. He had also called for issues concerning the state to be pursued collectively and through democratic means.

Dr Ranjan and MLA Thokchom Radheshyam were appointed government spokespersons by the Manipur government on July 14, 2026. Dr Ranjan is also the elected BJP MLA from Konthoujam Assembly constituency. The Manipur Legislative Assembly’s official profile records him as a member from the constituency and notes that he previously served as Minister for Health and Family Welfare and Cooperation.

Following the blast, residents of Konthoujam held a protest meeting outside the MLA’s residence, condemning the attack and demanding that those responsible be identified. Local women and members of the Konthoujam Youth Union Club took part in the protest.

Konthoujam Angoubi, president of the Konthoujam Kangjeibung Mapal Chaokhat Khongthang Nupi Lup, called for the perpetrators and the motive behind the explosion to be established at the earliest. She stated that incidents involving bombs being thrown into residential areas create fear among residents and should stop.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the explosion. No group has been identified as responsible for the incident, and the motive remains unknown.
