One farmer was killed and three seriously injured in an alleged ambush at Langka Naga village in Manipur, prompting an emergency shutdown by the Liangmai Naga Council.
Imphal, August 14: One person was killed and three others were seriously injured after farmers from Langka Naga village were allegedly ambushed while working at a paddy field on Friday morning, according to community sources and a statement issued by the Liangmai Naga Council, Manipur (LNC-M).
The incident reportedly took place at around 7:30–8:00 AM on August 14 at the agricultural fields of Langka Naga village, also known as Taniuluang. The attackers were alleged by the sources to be cadres of Kuki armed groups operating under Suspension of Operations (SoO) arrangements.
A source claimed that members of the KNF-P allegedly coordinated during the night before carrying out the attack on the village in the early morning. Another account alleged the involvement of cadres associated with the KRA and KNF SoO groups. These allegations could not be independently verified.
The victims identified in the reports are Wiriliangbou Chawang, 34, who succumbed to his injuries and was confirmed dead, and three others who sustained serious injuries.
They have been identified as Kawidinang Abonmai, 55; Maliangjinang Abonmai, 52; and Namthiulungbou Prinmai, 50.
The incident has triggered an immediate response from the Liangmai Naga Council, Manipur, which condemned what it described as an attack by KNF-P Kuki militants on Naga village volunteers and farmers.
In a statement issued on Friday, the LNC-M alleged that two Naga Village Volunteers were killed and several others injured in the attack. However, the victim details circulated alongside reports of the incident name one person, Wiriliangbou Chawang, as having died. The discrepancy could not be independently clarified at the time of publication.
Following the incident, the LNC-M declared an Emergency Total Shutdown across all Liangmai Naga-inhabited areas of Manipur with immediate effect and until further notice.
Under the shutdown call, shops, offices, institutions and non-essential activities have been asked to remain closed. Medical services, fire services and other emergency and essential services have been exempted.
The council urged members of the community to observe the shutdown peacefully and maintain calm and unity.
The LNC-M also called on the competent authorities to take immediate measures to protect civilians and ensure public safety. It demanded that those responsible for the attack be identified and brought to justice.
The alleged attack comes amid continuing security concerns in parts of Manipur, where armed groups and community organisations have repeatedly traded accusations over attacks on civilians and agricultural activities.
