Supreme Court reviews Manipur violence investigations and rehabilitation, directing verification of claims by affected families and disputed properties.
New Delhi, August 10: The Supreme Court on Monday took stock of the status of investigations by the CBI, NIA and SIT in connection with the Manipur violence and reviewed the implementation of rehabilitation measures for affected families.
During the hearing, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) referred to the Court’s May 27, 2026 order, which had considered the rehabilitation of people who lost their homes, dwelling units and sources of livelihood during the violence.
The Court was informed that funds had been disbursed to more than 4,000 of around 7,000 beneficiaries identified for reconstruction of houses. It also took note of a proposal to constitute a committee for reconstruction of tribal villages that were destroyed.
Under the government scheme, Rs 5 lakh is provided for a kutcha house and Rs 7 lakh for a semi-pucca or pucca house. More than 12,000 houses have so far been approved under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) for families affected by the violence, the Court was informed.
Temporary shelters have also been constructed for displaced families. A sum of Rs 51.95 crore has been released for 885 identified beneficiaries for permanent houses. In addition, Rs 1 lakh per household has been provided to families whose houses were completely damaged.
Committee asked to verify claims of 24,000 families
The hearing also brought a claim from some affected families that around 24,000 families were yet to receive the benefits of the government’s rehabilitation measures.
The Court was informed that details of these families had already been furnished to the three-member committee.
The CJI asked the committee to verify and confirm the particulars of the alleged affected families and submit a note on the implementation of the welfare schemes considered by the Supreme Court in its May 27 order.
The direction is aimed at establishing the status of the families claiming that they have not received the benefits despite being affected by the violence.
Property claims referred to committee
The Supreme Court also directed that an application concerning properties belonging to affected families be referred to the committee.
The committee has been asked to verify the particulars and status of the properties and submit a report to the Court.
The Court also considered claims relating to places of worship. A list of 276 properties has been furnished, with the claims concerning these properties requiring verification.
A separate list of 20 churches has been submitted in connection with allegations of encroachment. The representations include requests for immediate protective measures, such as fencing, to prevent further encroachment on certain properties.
The committee has been directed to examine the representations and verify the claims on the basis of relevant material and land records.
The concerned authorities have also been directed to ensure that there is no further encroachment on properties found to be covered by the claims.
A report on the verification of the properties and the alleged encroachments is to be placed before the Supreme Court.
The hearing forms part of the Court’s continuing consideration of matters arising from the Manipur violence, including investigations by central and state agencies, rehabilitation of affected families and disputes concerning properties and places of worship.
