Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam tells Assembly that police are probing the May 7 attacks on three Kamjong border villages that caused over Rs 5 crore damage.
Imphal, Sept 7: Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam on Monday informed the State Assembly that police are investigating the attack on three villages along the Myanmar border in Kamjong district, including allegations of involvement by the Myanmar-based KNF(B).
The attack took place on May 7 at Z Choro, Namlee and Wanglee villages, which are located close to the international border with Myanmar. Armed militants attacked the villages, leaving one person injured and 23 houses burnt, according to the Home Minister.
Responding to a question from Congress MLA K Ranjit Singh, Govindas stated that the state government had assessed the damage caused by the attack across the three villages. The total loss has been estimated at more than Rs 5 crore.
He informed the House that reconstruction of houses has already begun in the affected villages.
The Home Minister also recalled that he, along with some MLAs, had visited the border villages with relief materials shortly after the incident. He noted that the villages are located in remote areas, making access and relief operations difficult.
Govindas further stated that adequate security arrangements have since been put in place in the area following the attack.
During the Assembly proceedings, the minister was also asked whether the Myanmar-based rebel group KNF(B) was involved in the attack and subsequent arson.
Govindas stated that the investigation is still underway and that it would be too early to confirm whether the group was involved.
The government’s response comes amid continuing security concerns in remote areas along Manipur’s international boundary with Myanmar.
