Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam tells Assembly that IDP compensation for lost movable assets will be considered after resettlement and rehabilitation.
Imphal, Sept 7: The Manipur government will consider compensation for movable assets lost by Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) after their resettlement and rehabilitation is completed, Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam informed the State Assembly on Monday.
Responding to a question from Congress MLA Kangujam Ranjit Singh, the Home Minister stated that the government remains committed to the welfare of people affected by the crisis in the state.
Govindas Konthoujam informed the House that no compensation has so far been provided to IDPs for losses involving movable assets.
The issue was raised in connection with the government’s plans to compensate displaced families for belongings and other movable property they lost during the crisis.
In response to a supplementary question seeking a specific timeframe for compensation, the Home Minister did not provide a stipulated date. Instead, he assured the Assembly that the government would examine the matter of compensation after the resettlement and rehabilitation of IDPs are completed.
The minister stated that the resettlement and rehabilitation process would be completed once the law and order situation in the state improves.
The government’s position places the restoration of normalcy and the return of displaced people as a prerequisite for completing the rehabilitation process.
The statement comes as thousands of people displaced by the crisis continue to await permanent resettlement and rehabilitation arrangements.
