Congress MP Bimol Akoijam has expressed his willingness to contest the 2027 Manipur Assembly elections from Keishamthong if his party nominates him as its candidate.
Imphal, Oct. 18: Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has expressed his willingness to contest the 2027 Manipur Legislative Assembly elections from Keishamthong constituency, saying he would enter the electoral contest if his party nominates him.
Speaking at an event in Imphal on Sunday, Bimol Akoijam said he was prepared to contest from Keishamthong if the Congress gave him the ticket, making his electoral plans for the next Assembly polls public.
The announcement comes as political parties and leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, although Bimol Akoijam's candidature will depend on the party's decision.
Bimol Akoijam made the announcement while addressing a programme at Keishampat Keisham Leikai Community Hall in Imphal on October 18. The event marked the 78th anniversary of Manipur's first elected Assembly, established on October 18, 1948, according to India Today NE.
“If the party gives me the ticket, I will contest from Keishamthong Assembly Constituency,” Bimol Akoijam said.
During his address, the MP also urged voters to look beyond candidates' development promises when deciding whom to elect. He said priority should be given to representatives who could protect Manipur and ensure a secure future for the state.
His remarks place the Keishamthong constituency at the centre of his stated Assembly election plans, although he has not confirmed a candidature independent of the Congress nomination process.
Bimol Akoijam represents the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha constituency and was elected to Parliament on a Congress ticket in the 2024 general election. The official Lok Sabha member profile identifies him as a member of the Indian National Congress.
The 2027 Assembly election will determine the composition of Manipur's 60-member Legislative Assembly. Bimol Akoijam's latest statement indicates that he is willing to move from parliamentary representation to state-level electoral politics, subject to his party's decision.
