BJP Women MPs Meet President Murmu

New Delhi, Oct. 13: A delegation of 15 women MPs from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by party national vice-president and Lok Sabha MP Dr D. Purandeswari, met President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan and submitted a memorandum concerning the sexual harassment allegations against Congress MP from Inner Manipur, Angomcha Bimol Akoijam.

The delegation called for swift and impartial legal proceedings, a parliamentary inquiry into Akoijam’s conduct and his suspension from parliamentary proceedings pending the inquiry. It also urged the President to ensure the protection of the complainants’ privacy, academic careers and safety.

According to the memorandum, the delegation drew the President’s attention to complaints filed by female students against Akoijam, a former professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) who currently represents Inner Manipur in the Lok Sabha.

The memorandum stated that JNU had dismissed Akoijam from service through an order dated October 9, 2026, following an internal investigation into the allegations. An FIR has also been registered in connection with the case.

The BJP delegation expressed concern over what it described as the Congress leadership’s silence and inaction following the developments. It called on the party to take a clear and accountable position on the allegations, questioning its stance on women’s safety and dignity.

Seeks Lok Sabha Ethics Committee Inquiry

One of the delegation’s key demands was that the matter be brought to the attention of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and referred to the House’s Ethics Committee for a comprehensive examination of the MP’s conduct.

The MPs also urged the President to facilitate the suspension of Akoijam from parliamentary proceedings while the inquiry was pending, arguing that the issue required institutional scrutiny.

The memorandum called for legal proceedings to be conducted without political influence or interference. It also stressed that the allegations should be dealt with through the appropriate legal and institutional processes.

Calls for Protection of Complainants

The delegation called for strict measures to protect the safety, dignity and privacy of the students who lodged complaints against Akoijam. It urged the authorities to ensure that the students’ academic work, research, future careers and educational opportunities were not adversely affected.

The MPs also specifically sought protection for the 11 female students referred to in the memorandum, urging that no punitive action be taken against them and that they should not face retaliation for raising their complaints.

The delegation said the students’ academic progress and future should remain protected while the matter proceeded through the relevant processes.

Delegation Led by D. Purandeswari

The delegation included BJP Mahila Morcha national president and MP Roop Kumari Chaudhary, along with MPs Dr Alka Gurjar, Sangeeta Kumari Singh Deo, Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi, Sandhya Ray, Geeta Shakya, Dr Kalpana Saini, Rekha Sharma, S. Phangnon Konyak, Maya Chintaman Iwnate, Malvika Devi, Kamaljeet Sehrawat, Kamlesh Jangde, Anita Subhadarshini and Bansuri Swaraj.

The meeting comes amid political reactions to Akoijam’s dismissal from JNU and the FIR registered against him. While BJP leaders have demanded accountability and institutional action, Akoijam has disputed the allegations and said the merits of the case should be examined in court.

The allegations and the competing claims surrounding the case remain subject to the relevant legal and institutional processes.
