Manipur CM Launches Sustainable Lifestyle Week

Imphal, Nov. 1: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Sunday launched BRICS Sustainable Lifestyle Week 2026 and flagged off a cyclothon involving around 200 cyclists in Imphal, while separately calling for peaceful coexistence and harmony among all communities in the state.

The Chief Minister launched the weeklong environmental campaign at Khuman Lampak. Organised by the Government of Manipur from November 1 to 7, the programme aims to encourage environmentally responsible lifestyles and greater public participation in conservation efforts.

Addressing the gathering, Khemchand said the initiative was inspired by Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to promote sustainable living through changes in everyday habits.

He said Manipur’s rich biodiversity, forests, rivers and wetlands were valuable natural assets that needed protection for future generations. Environmental conservation, he added, was not merely the government’s responsibility but a collective duty of every citizen.

The Chief Minister urged people, particularly young people, to conserve water and energy, avoid single-use plastics, reduce waste and keep their surroundings clean. He also called on government departments, educational institutions, local bodies and community organisations to participate in the campaign and continue promoting the principles of Mission LiFE beyond the weeklong programme.

Khemchand said individual efforts, when combined, could contribute to building a cleaner, greener and healthier Manipur.

During the launch, he administered an environmental protection pledge and joined other dignitaries in planting saplings at the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex.

The cyclothon began at Khuman Lampak, with around 200 cyclists travelling through Khuyathong Road, Babupara, Imphal West and Imphal East before returning to the starting point. Chief Secretary Rajeev Singh Thakur, senior government officials, students and other participants attended the programme.

Chief Minister Appeals for Inter-Community Harmony

Later, addressing the 35th Coral Jubilee Celebration of Brahma Kumaris Manipur at the Bhagyachandra Open Air Theatre (BOAT), Palace Compound, Imphal, the Chief Minister urged all communities to work together to make Manipur a peaceful state where people live in harmony and mutual understanding.

Khemchand acknowledged the organisation’s work in Manipur, noting that Brahma Kumaris began its journey in the state in 1992 and had continued its mission of selfless service with humility, dedication and sincerity.

He called on participants to pray for peace, harmony and peaceful coexistence among all communities in Manipur.

The Chief Minister also referred to the role of meditation in fostering positive thinking and reducing negativity. He said meditation could help cultivate a positive outlook and contribute to building a peaceful society.

Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, MLAs Thongam Shanti Singh and Mayanglambam Rameshwar Singh, representatives of Brahma Kumaris from different states and other dignitaries attended the celebration.
